We witness more men sporting mustaches as November comes around. Mustache November, or Movember, is an annual month-long event globally that dedicates the growing of mustaches to help raise awareness for men’s health.
Movember was founded in 2003 in Australia.
From growing a Mo to global collaboration, the Movember Foundation provides an umbrella view of men’s health issues globally and has taken its funding to revolutionize the prostate cancer and testicular cancer research world by creating the Global Action Plan (GAP).
In Canada, the Canadian Men’s Health Foundation (CMHF) a national not-for-profit organization which empowered to inspire Canadian men to lead and live healthier lives, is receiving $5 million, over five years, from Ontario government to: support CMHF’s work to increase men’s health literacy, improve research and data collection, reach men in ethnic communities who are at increased risk, and engage with healthcare professionals and chronic disease organizations to help men make better health decisions.
Canadian studies show men aged 30 – 64 over 65% are overweight or obese, almost 50% are inactive, over 40% binge drink and 26% smoke. Men are 40 percent more likely than women to die from cancer and 70 percent more likely to die of heart disease. These increased risks can be directly linked to nutrition, exercise, alcohol consumption and smoking.
For this issue, we filled these pages – cover to cover – with information for health awareness and healthier lifestyle. Gracing the cover is a painting I saw on my Facebook feed, and almost immediately contacted the artist, Nicole Alexander; only to find a unique and inspirational story. Our ONE ON ONE interview is on pages 33 to 35.
